Behnan Maxwell, LCSW
I help adults & teens manage anxiety.
I am a psychotherapist, career changer, immigrant, wife and mother.
I can also call myself feelings translator, behavior reader and life goals planner. I am originally from Turkey and have been in the US for over 20 years. I used to work in Business and Finance industry for years. I have done my share of self-reflection and made some major life changes.
I earned my Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University with a focus in substance use and trauma. I received my post-graduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from the Training Institute of Mental Health. My education and my personal life experiences make me good at what I do. I get my clients in a distinct way because I, myself, have been there and I know how to get out.
Prior to private practice, I worked in inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment centers. I treated people who have dual diagnosis – substance use disorders in addition to anxiety, depression, mood disorders, PTSD and eating disorders. I am familiar with twelve-steps as well as harm reduction approaches.
I am experienced in treating a range of issues such as childhood trauma, identity issues, grief, loss due to immigration as well as stresses caused by major life transitions such as relocation, divorce and having children.
In my therapy practice, I tailor my treatment model to fit your unique needs.
I am a non-judgmental, compassionate listener. I am mindful of not losing my objectivity to help you improve yourself and your environment to meet your needs. I am told that I am funny! I often use humor respectfully and responsibly in therapy. I believe laughter helps us cope with difficult situations and heal. Did you know when we laugh, our brains release endorphins (feel-good chemical)? Pretty cool! If you look for a traditional, quiet therapist, I may not be a good fit for you. I am involved and invested in your self-growth.
I utilize many therapy modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Trauma-Focused Interventions, Crisis Intervention, Structural Family Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
I see the therapy process as collaborative teamwork when my client and I solve problems together. I am not an expert on your life, but here to guide you to have a better handle on the stresses in your life. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my approach and answer any questions you may have. Please call, email or use my secure portal to request an appointment.
Wish you the best on your journey to self-growth!
